Does Your Dentist Screen for Oral Cancer?
There are more than 200,000 cases of Oral Cancer diagnosed in the US each year. Most of the patients diagnosed are between 41-60 years old. However, recently the greatest increase in new cases has been found in patients between 19-40 years old. This increase has two main causes: an increase in the use of chewing tobacco in young, male athletes and the predominance of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). HPV can be a precursor to Oral Cancer and is spread by sexual contact and found in both males and females.
At The New Jersey Center for Laser and Cosmetic Dentistry, we perform an advanced Oral Cancer Screening using The Oral ID Screening System. In addition to the routine head and neck examination that Dr. DalBon performs, he utilizes a special light and filtered glasses to locate inflammatory lesions that can not been seen with the naked eye. A found lesion does not in itself diagnose Oral Cancer, but rather an area that need further investigation. The Oral ID Screening is performed for every adult patient, at every examination and at NO additional charge. Dr. DalBon does not charge any additional fees for the exam because he feels so strongly about protecting his patients.
